The Kapalua Timeline

1836 

Kapalua Resort's modern history began with the arrival of the Reverend Dr. Dwight Baldwin in Lahaina.

1889

Dwight's eldest son, Henry Baldwin, went into business with Samuel Alexander, founding what would become one of Hawaii's larges corporations.

1902

Construction begaon on the Hookohau Ditch Water System to bring water from the West Maui mountain peaks to the plains.

1904

Construction of the water system that blasted tunnels through lava rock and crossed ravines was completed.

 1912

The first 20 acres of pineapple was planted north of Lahaina at Honolua.

1920

Baldwin Packers built a new cannery in Lahaina (at the current site of the Lahaina Cannery Mall), transporting freshly picked pineapples aboard the Pioneer Mill trains.

1932

Haleakala Pineapple Company (another Baldwin enterprise) purchased Maui Agricultural Company's holding to become Maui Pineapple Company.

1962

The Lahaina Cannery ceased operations all pineapple processing was moved to Kahului.

1978

Maui Land & Pineapple Company began developing a planned resort and the 196-room Kapalua Bay Hotel was opened under the management of Rock Resorts.

1989

Excavation for The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua unearthed a large, pre-Western contact burial site.  The Honokahua Burial site is located near the ocean.

1992

Maui Land & Pineapple Company, Inc. created the largest privately owned nature preserve in the state, Pu'u Kukui Watershed Preserve.

2009

The Ritz-Carlton Club and Residences, Kapalua Bay and the Kapalua Spa are opened.  The Residences are located in what was the location of Kapalua Bay Hotel.  Many other improvements are introduced such as the Honolua Store Renovation and additions to the trail system.

 

Kapalua Land Company announces streamlined operations to focus on managing the resort rather than specifically running each operation.  KLC will partner with "best in class" operators in their respective fields who can operate select assets of the resort more effectively.

 

On November 3, Maui Pineapple Company announced the closure of its pineapple operations by the end of 2009.  The company explains that the pineapple business has sustained heavy losses since 2002 and the pineapple business has become more challenging with higher production costs and severe pressure on revenues.
